URBAN ASSEMBLIES

Urban Assemblies aims to document and validate the ground up structures littered around our highly policed urban infrastructures. Going against the jurisdiction of the land, these subversive bricolage reforms the experience of our monotonous outdoor public cadence. Collecting the stories of individuals, documenting the anomalies within their immediate surroundings, this zine displays photographs and illustrations of the weird and wonderful bricolage morphologies.

The common threads of territorialisation and boundaries in our cramped urban environment, is shown though this zine exploration. The themes of guerilla defiance and the savviness ignites the emergence of interesting assemblages, cutting against the grain of social norms and enforced guidelines.

From the scaffolds of societal change, to the mundane articles that congregate society, these temporal indicators are a by-product of our man-made environment.

Divided into chapters of varying transient morphologies, the images can be interpreted as a continuous narrative of our transient territories, encasing the potential of transformation within, redeveloping current grounds for future improvements.

The Hyper Curation
of Nature
The current planting and landscaping methodology of Singapore, lies in a highly curated image of what the state wants to be perceived as. This current top-down approach to gardening and greening of the state stifles the individual and personal expressions. It centres our greening efforts into a central utopic vision, dedicated to establishing a clear optic for Singapore.

This photo zine compiles film and digital images captured whilst travelling, using Singapore as a key precedent for the apotheosis of Nature Curation. Contrasting moments of control and respite, we see the dualities of a policed ‘nature’ and how life flourishes within our City in Nature.

Documenting
Defu Lane
A film zine documenting the wild beauty of the disappearing Defu Lane, the last of the original industrial lands next to Paya Lebar Airbase. This disconnected district reminisces of a rural Kampong community, with time almost becoming relative, slowing down within. An overgrown population of wild plants integrates itself into the fabric of the temporal industrial structures, rooting the site in a form of permanence.
