Steel Fastening Bind, Assembled by Hand
Featuring a steel fastening bind, the landscape oriented zine explores the sedimentation of time, culture, and everything in between. It expresses the anxiety of an eventual loss of our history and time accumulated traces. The book features a series of film and digital images, paired with footnotes, describing the scenes.
Accretions and Mutations documents and juxtaposes frames of transcribed photographs, analysing the sedimentation and layering of time, culture, and everything in between. Weirdly liminal images speaks of alternate realities, one that illustrates the accumulation or contorsioning of the norm. The zine delves into complex relationships and pairs images with footnotes to begin questioning the everyday.
Inspired by our local context, the loss of architectural and cultural heritage is seen through the cultural bleaching of our historical vernacular icons, the shophouses of Chinatown. Systematically wiped is the intangible culture and chaos of the past, leaving behind a fragmented and sterile machine of consumerism for kitsche tourist memorabilia.
Presently, the hollow shells stand present as a product of urban renewal, favouring the clean and sterile. The twisted and dead form of the shophouses is peeking through the paraphernalia, you just got to know where to look.
